Belly dance or oriental dance is one of the oldest known dances. The most common belief is that originally comes from North Africa as a dance associated with childbirth. Through Egypt, and as a result of the domination of the region by the Ottoman Empire in the sixteenth century, the dance came to Turkey, where it became popular for its daring and cheerful style.
Belly dance is characterized by soft and undulating movements of the hip, belly and chest. There is no set tempo and permanent contact with the ground bare feet is key to make elegant muscular movements, thus differing from western dances (based primarily on the steps). This is a very appropriate dance for women as it perfectly suits to their body’s uniqueness and is also an ideal postpartum exercise for pregnant women. It is also a good cardiovascular exercise that helps to improve flexibility and strength, while eliminating stress.
